In this workshop, we will explore the potential of a single pen nib through many exercises. We will put aside the rules for writing formal calligraphic letters, such as pen angle, ductus, difference between uppercase and lowercase, and simply explore what is possible with this nib. In time, we will find ourselves manipulating a pen as part of our body without thinking. This is a huge advantage regardless of what type of calligraphy style we are pursuing.

There will be many seeds of inspiration scattered throughout the workshop. This is because knowing the potential of the pen also leads to grasping new ways of expression. Encounters with those seeds will surely be a pleasure on your journey, and may even change your view of calligraphy.

このワークショップでは、ひとつのペンニブが持つ可能性を沢山の課題を通して探っていきます。普段カリグラフィーの文字を書く時の、ペンアングル、書き順、大文字と小文字というような約束ごとから離れて、シンプルに「このペン先ひとつでどういうことができるのか」を試していくのがメインのテーマです。そして時間の経過と共に、無意識にペンを身体の一部として操作していることに気付くでしょう。これは、皆さんがどの様なカリグラフィーのスタイルを追求して行くかに関わらず、とても大きな利点となります。

このワークショップには、インスピレーションの種が無数に散らばっています。それは、ペンの可能性を知ることが、新たな表現方法を知ることにもつながっているからです。数々の種との遭遇は、きっと皆さんの道中の喜びとなり、また、皆さんが見るカリグラフィーの「景色」さえも変えてくれるかもしれません。

When you think of flat-brush lettering, Roman Imperial capitals, such those in the Trajan inscription, may come to your mind. It must be the most aesthetic style of letters to write with a flat brush, but it is not the only delightful style that is possible with this writing tool. The flat brush is far more flexible than a broad-nib pen, and gives us more freedom in writing. It can make our letters dynamic and also subtle by use of texture. We can even make the letters on a flat surface look three-dimensional.
The theme of this class is to write letters that interact with each other while being conscious of contrast and harmony. I have decided to call it ‘call and response’. We will begin with writing several types of lines in a playful approach, learn how to make contrast and harmony, and then find ways to make the letters interact.
The lines you make by calligraphic call and response and their textural view will delight our eyes and hearts.

皆さんは、平筆と言えば1番にインペリアル・キャピタルを思い浮かべるかもしれません。Trajanの碑文のような文字は、美しさの頂点と言えるでしょう。しかし平筆を使う喜びはそれだけではありません。平筆は平ペンよりもはるかにフレキシブルで、書く人に自由さを与えてくれます。書道の筆のように線の強弱や掠れによって、表情のある線を書くこともできますし、平面を「3D」に変えることも可能です。

このクラスでは、コントラストとハーモニーを意識して、文字が対話するように書いて行くことを主題にしています。私はこれを「カリグラフィーのコール＆レスポンス」と呼ぶことにしました。最初は、遊び心のあるアプローチで何種類かの線を書くことからスタートして、コントラストとハーモニーの作り方を学び、そして文字をうまく作用させ合う方法を探していきます。
呼応する線、そして平筆特有のテクスチャーから生まれる眺めが、きっと私たちの目と心を喜ばせてくれるでしょう。
